Handling your My Little Foodie Leftovers – Here’s what you Need to Know!

Handling your My Little Foodie Leftovers – Here’s what you Need to Know!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In a world where a third of all food produced globally goes to waste, it may (or may not!) come as a surprise to hear that the average UK household wastes the equivalent of EIGHT MEALS a week! Not using food in time, personal preference and cooking/ serving too much food have all been listed as the main reasons for food being thrown away in the UK… Well, knowing how to safely handle leftovers can be the key to helping you reduce your food waste without putting the safety of your family at risk, as well as being a really practical way to have quick meals ready to go – perfect for all stages of weaning! All of our My Little Foodie meal kits always allow you to cook more than what you need so you can portion up the food to serve at a later date…. So, what are the key things you need to be aware of when handling leftovers?

COOL YOUR LEFTOVERS QUICKLY

- Any food you intend on re-using must be cooled as quickly as possible, but always within 2 hours. For some tips on how to speed up the cooling process, check out the short video below:

FOLLOW THE SHELF-LIFE GUIDANCE ON EACH OF OUR RECIPE CARDS

– As a rule of thumb, all leftovers kept in the fridge should be used within 2 days (1 day for rice dishes) or popped in the freezer if you don’t think you’re going to use your leftovers in this time!

DIVIDE AND CONQUER!

– Remember that foods should only be reheated once so make sure you divide your leftovers into baby-friendly portions before storing in the fridge or freezer! How do you know if it’s okay to freeze your leftovers?! Fear not – all of our recipe cards tell you whether a meal kit is suitable for freezing after cooking! Rest assured though that even if you used defrosted raw meat or used frozen veggies you can still portion and freeze the cooked leftovers to reheat another day! Just remember that you should only reheat leftovers once! So for example, if you use defrosted raw chicken and cooked it within a pie, you can freeze the leftover cooked pie to reheat another day!

What about Leftover Rice?

In short…. Yes it IS absolutely fine to keep leftover rice but it’s a particularly high risk product so there are a couple of extra things you need to be aware of so make sure you check out our  page.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
